Stephen Copeland

Born in Stalford, Northwest England

Lives & works in New Jersey

 

Stephen Copeland was first introduced to the cello by attending local concerts of the Halle Orchestra and Camerata Chamber Orchestra. As a student of the cello, he was influenced by cellist such as Pablo Casals, Paul Tortelier and Christine Waleska. At the age of sixteen, he studied at the Huddersfield School of Music and later at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester with Czech cellist Boris Hellor. After coming to the United States, he began graduate studies at the Manhattan School of Music with Marion Feldman and doctoral studies at the Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University, with Zara Nelsova. During his studies at the Manhattan School of Music, he performed the Lalo Concerto at a masterclass given by Yo Yo Ma. He was the CW Post University Summer Festival Concerto Competition winner in 1994 performing the Haydn Cello Concerto in C Major.

Stephen Copeland has performed off Broadway shows as accompanying solo cellist doing a medley of "musical classics". He has performed as a freelance musician with orchestra and chamber ensembles in the tri-state area including the Harmonia Opera Orchestra, Garden State Philharmonic, Long Island Festival Orchestra and New York City Symphony. Currently, Stephen Copeland is the Department Head of Strings at the Calderone School of Music in East Hanover, New Jersey.
